
Originally a garage for Aurelius S Hinds. A successful druggist and businessman. At some point, it was converted to a home. The details of the street facades and gardens are wonderful.

It doesn’t get much worse

1365 Westbrook Street. The Francis Waldo / Daniel Dole house.

Much has been said and written about General Samuel Waldo. War hero. Scoundrel. Promoter of colonial settlement. Opportunist. Above all of these, for our purposes, he was a powerful force in the early settlement of Portland and the area.

The attribution of the origin of the fire to kids playing with firecrackers is not supported by historical informatíon. It is at best apocryphal and, in my opinion, is pure anti-irish just as blaming Chicago’s fire of 1871 on Mrs O’Leary’s cow was.
