Okay. Not so much the gutter but the downspout. Where did we go wrong?

Once a functional object blessed with aesthetic value, gutters and downspouts have become degenerate. These utilitarian objects were fabricated on site by skilled craftsmen. Now they are purchased off the shelf of the DIY center or spat out the back of a truck like some monstrous pasta machine.
