West End Walks. The Spring houses. Of details and decay
On the upper blocks of Danforth Street, at the corner of Emery Street, sits a pair of imposing brick houses. Built in the early 1850s for members of a mercantile family whose history is now a bit vague, they now present a dichotomy of care and neglect.

Much has been said and written about General Samuel Waldo. War hero. Scoundrel. Promoter of colonial settlement. Opportunist. Above all of these, for our purposes, he was a powerful force in the early settlement of Portland and the area.

110 Pleasant Street. A carriage house with a long history.
It sits, rather forlornly, behind the group home at 71 High Street. Neglected and overlooked, it seems to be the victim of ‘destruction by neglect’. A sad state for a building with a long story to tell. With a construction date of 1800, I believe it to be the oldest carriage house in Portland.
